In this article, I check out how many of these differences play out in a particular encounter between a tourist guide and Asian holidaymakers in Jogja, Indonesia. I argue that this particular interaction challenges existing assumptions regarding the changing role of your tour guide – away from a great instrumental and entertainment function into a more franche and ethnic one – which is even more suitable for Asian customers.
